Fast Start Sparks Holy Cross Past Hockey

Holy Cross scored three goals on its first five shots of the game as it recorded a 4-3 victory over Canisius in Atlantic Hockey America action Friday at LECOM Harborcenter in downtown Buffalo.

Connor Welsh, Quinn McCall and David Hymovitch all scored during the early-game outburst for the Crusaders (14-13-2, 12-7-2 AHA). Timothy Heinke tallied the eventual game-winning goal in the second period while Danick Leroux made 26 saves between the pipes for the visitors.

Graduate Alton McDermott recorded two goals for the Golden Griffins (14-13-2, 9-10-2 AHA). Senior Grant Porter accounted for the third goal for Canisius while senior Killian Kiecker-Olson dished out two assists.

Welsh opened the scoring just 72 seconds into the contest when he fired a loose puck past the blocker of Canisius starter Chase Clark from the middle of the slot.

McCall doubled the Crusaders advantage to 2-0 with 6:08 elapsed in the opening frame, putting a wrist shot past the glove of Clark from the top of the right face-off circle.

Hymovitch stretched the Holy Cross cushion to 3-0 just past the midway point of the first, jamming home a loose puck from just off the left post after Clark made the initial save on a shot from Owain Johnston.

McDermott got Canisius on the board at the 13:30 mark of the first period, wiring a puck over the left shoulder of Leroux to trim the Griffs deficit to 3-1.
Heinke restored the Crusaders three-goal cushion just past the eight-minute mark of the second, putting home a centering feed from Jack Seymour for his fourth goal of the campaign.

Porter pulled the Griffs back within two less than four minutes after Heinke's marker as he redirected a shot from junior Walter Zacher past Leroux to make it a 4-2 contest heading into the third.
McDermott made it a one-goal game moments before the seven-minute mark of the third, stuffing a loose puck under Leroux for his second of the game. That was as close as the Griffs would get, however, as the Crusaders held off a late surge from Canisius to secure the one-goal victory.

Sophomore Petter Wickström Stumer replaced Clark after the third Holy Cross goal and turned aside 22-of-23 shots faced.
