Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men’s Soccer Defeated by Marist Saturday

Chris Verheul netted two second-half tallies to lead Marist to a 3-1 win over Canisius in Metro Conference men's soccer action Saturday at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

Adriano Iannello accounted for the first goal of the afternoon for the Red Foxes (4-2-4, 2-1-1 Metro). Alex Murania started in net for Marist, making four saves.

Senior Gael Arceo netted his second goal of the season for the Golden Griffins (1-9-1, 0-4-1 Metro). Junior Adam Schantz made the start in goal for the home team, making one save.

Marist opened the scoring just seven minutes into Saturday's contest as Caio Cavaletti worked a give-and-go with Iannello, who found himself behind the defense and slotted the ball into the net to give the Red Foxes an early lead.

The Griffs responded 10 minutes later when junior Romero Nicolazzo found sophomore Larry Jimenez at the top of the box. Jimenez's shot was redirected to Arceo at the back post, who netted the Griffs opening goal to even the score at 1-1.

The two teams remained tied until Verheul broke the deadlock in the 60th minute. Ronan Hogg's shot was blocked by a Canisius defender before the rebound fell to Verheul, who placed the ball into the open net to give Marist a 2-1 advantage.

The Red Foxes closed out the scoring in the 83rd minute when Verheul capitalized on a Griffs turnover deep in their own end, collecting the loose ball and beating Schantz for his second goal of the afternoon to seal the 3-1 victory.
