Men’s Basketball Fights Off Manhattan for Third-Straight Win

Four Canisius players scored in double figures, led by junior Bryan Ndjonga, who scored a career-high 26 points, as the Golden Griffins went on the road and beat Manhattan 70-64 at Draddy Gymnasium in Riverdale, N.Y., Friday night.

Junior Khalil Singleton scored 12 points and fellow junior Mike Evbagharu added 11 points and nine rebounds as the Griffs extended their win streak to three straight with the victory. Canisius improved to 8-8 overall and 3-2 in MAAC play with the win, while Manhattan fell to 7-10 overall and 3-3 in league action with the loss.

Ndjonga scored his career-high 26 points after he went 8-for-15 from the field, 2-for-4 from 3-point land and a perfect 8-for-8 from the free-throw line in 35:32 of action. Ndjonga also grabbed a career-high nine rebounds in the win to go with three assists, a steal and a blocked shot. Graduate student Myles Wilmoth grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds in the victory, as Canisius out-rebounded Manhattan 42-35 for the game, and fellow graduate student Marcus Niblack was credited with a game-high six assists as the Blue and Gold finished the contest with 21 assists on 25 made field goals.

For Manhattan, Terrance Jones came off the bench and scored a team-high 15 points, while Jaden Wonston chipped in 12 points. Fraser Roxburgh posted a double-double in the loss for the Jaspers with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Manhattan led by as many as 10 points with 6:26 left in the opening half before Canisius was able to score 13 of the final 20 points before halftime to trim the Jaspers' lead to 32-28 at the break. Ndjonga scored nine of Canisius' 13 points in the surge before intermission.

In the second half, the Griffins used an 8-0 run over the span of 2:24 to take a 39-37 lead with 14:57 left in the contest. Neither team led by more than two points for the contest's next 7:34 until Evbagharu drained a pair of free-throws to put the Blue and Gold in the lead at 52-48 with 7:13 remaining. A bucket by Evbagharu on Canisius' next trip down the floor stretched the Griffs' hold to six points at 54-48 with 6:56 left to play.

Jones and Winston fueled an 8-2 run over the game's next 1:44 to knot the game at 56-56, but the Jaspers could never get over the hump, and Canisius took the lead for good with 3:37 left on the clock after Wilmoth drilled a 3-pointer from the top of the key to put Canisius ahead 61-58. Down the stretch, the Griffs made 5-of-6 chances from the free-throw line to seal the victory, the team's first road conference victory of the season.

• The Griffs are on their first three-game win streak since Feb. 18-March 1, 2024.

• Wilmoth is averaging 6.8 rebounds per game in the team's first five MAAC games of the season.
