Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Iona Ends Men’s Basketball’s Win Streak

The host Iona Gaels used a 24-5 run over the span of 9:00 midway through the second half to score a 74-48 win over Canisius in MAAC men's basketball action Sunday afternoon at the Hynes Athletic Center in New Rochelle, N.Y.

The win moved Iona to 12-6 overall and 4-3 in MAAC play, while the Golden Griffins saw their three-game win streak come to an end with the loss. Canisius is now 8-9 overall and 3-4 in conference games.

Eight different Iona players scored five-or more points in the victory, as the host Gaels shot 53.7 percent from the field, highlighted by a 63.0 percent success rate from the floor in the game's second half. Guard Denver Anglin led the way with a game-high 14 points, as four of his five makes from the field came from 3-point land. As a team, Iona knocked down 13 3-pointers, going 13-for-28 (46.4 percent) from beyond the arc.

Junior Mike Evbagharu led the way for Canisius with 10 points to go along with six rebounds, an assist and a steal. Junior Kahlil Singleton scored nine points, while Bryan Ndjonga and Myles Wilmoth scored eight and seven points, respectively. Those two players, a graduate student guard Marcus Niblack all recorded five rebounds in the losing cause, as Iona out-rebounded the Griffs by a 42-30 clip.

Canisius came out of the locker room and used a 7-0 run in the opening 2:47 of the second half to turn a 30-25 deficit into a 32-30 lead with 17:13 left in the game. In that run, Singleton scored five of the Blue and Gold's seven points, capped by a deep, step-back 3-pointer in transition. That lead, the Griffs' first since the scoreboard read 13-12 with 11:17 left in the first half, was short-lived. Iona's Lamin Sabally hit a floater in the lane on the Gaels' next possession, knotting the game at 32-32 before Iona took a 30-second timeout.

Out of that timeout, Iona took control of the game, outscoring Canisius 24-5 over the next 9:00. In that decisive run, the Gaels made five 3-point field goals. Four different Gaels made triples in that stretch, including a pair from C.J. Anthony, who finished the game with 12 points and a game-high six assists.
