Manhattan Defeats Women's Basketball

Junior Shariah Gailes scored a game-high 18 points, but it was not enough as Manhattan coasted to a 69-43 win over Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's basketball action Thursday at the Koessler Athletic Center in Buffalo, N.Y.

With the victory, Manhattan improved to 2-12 and 2-3 in conference play. Canisius, meanwhile, fell to 2-12 overall and 0-5 in MAAC action with the loss.

Four Jaspers finished with double-digit points in the wire-to-wire victory. The visitors were led by Krisitina Juric, who tallied 16 points. Brianna Davis (14), Elisa Sole Sanchez (12), and Hanna Muhl (10) rounded out the Jasper quartet in double figures. 


Sophomore Yasmine Djibril joined Gailes in double digits with 11 points. Senior Franka Wittenberg and Gailes both finished with a game-high matching seven rebounds.

Manhattan never trailed in the contest, hitting four of its first five shots from the floor to open the game on an 11-3 spurt. After out-scoring Canisius, 19-14, in the first quarter, the Jaspers continued to push ahead, adding to its lead during the second quarter to take a 29-20 advantage into the halftime break.

Manhattan iced the contest in the third, using a 17-4 run to end the quarter with a 52-26 lead. In the final quarter of play, Canisius and Manhattan both scored 17 points to help the Jaspers secure the victory. 

GAME NOTES
• Canisius and Manhattan met for the 75th time in series history Thursday.
• Gailes made her return to the court following a two-game absence due to an upper body injury.
• Canisius' 17 points in the fourth quarter marked their highest scoring period of the day.
• All 13 of Canisius' active players checked into the contest.
• Canisius went 10-for-13 (76.9%) from the free throw line.
• Canisius and Manhattan ended the game tied in rebounds, 32-32.

Canisius continues a two-game homestand against Iona on Saturday afternoon. Game time inside the Koessler Athletic Center is slated for 1 p.m. and the contest will air on ESPN+.
