Women's Basketball Drops Saturday Matinee to Iona

Iona's Zoey Ward scored a game-high 24 points to lead the visiting Gaels to a 60-51 win over Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's basketball action Saturday inside the Koessler Athletic Center in Buffalo, N.Y.

Mya Zaccagnini turned in 11 points while Issabellah Middleton added 13 rebounds for the Gaels as they improved to 10-7 overall and 3-2 in MAAC action with the victory.

Junior Shariah Gailes led Canisius with 14 points and 8 rebounds as the Golden Griffins fell to 2-13 overall and 0-6 in league play. Sophomore Yasmine Djibril joined Gailes in double figures as she posted 12 points. Canisius shot 37.3 percent (19-for-51) from the floor for the contest.

Both sides combined for 38 points in the opening quarter with Iona holding a 21-17 lead after 10 minutes of play. Iona built upon that advantage in the second stanza, out-scoring Canisius by a 12-8 margin to take a 29-19 lead into the locker room.

With the Gaels holding a 39-26 edge with 8:20 remaining in the third quarter, a pair of made free throws from senior Franka Wittenberg started a 15-3 Canisius run that carried over into the fourth quarter and brought the Griffs' within one, 42-41, with 9:02 left.

Iona regained control moments later, taking advantage of five Canisius turnovers to spark a 13-2 run that stretched its lead back to double digits. The Griffs looked to spark a comeback, with sophomore Corniya Clay converting on consecutive trips down the court to bring the Gaels lead down to 57-51 with 21 seconds remaining. With Canisius forced to foul, Iona took advantage of three free throws in the final seconds to close out the contest.
