Hockey Rallies for Overtime Victory at Niagara

Senior forward Grant Porter scored at the 2:47 mark of overtime to lift Canisius to a 4-3 victory over Battle of the Bridge rival Niagara in Atlantic Hockey America action Saturday at Dwyer Arena in Lewiston, N.Y.

Porter scored two goals for the Golden Griffins (14-10-2, 9-7-2 AHA), who rallied from a 3-0 deficit midway through the contest to earn the victory. Junior Walter Zacher tallied a goal and added two assists while senior Robert Kincaid chipped in a goal and an assist for Canisius. Sophomore netminder Petter Wickström Stumer finished with 24 saves.

Ross Roloson, Jacob Maillett and Spencer Young accounted for the three goals for the Purple Eagles (8-16-1, 5-12-1 AHA). Mitchell Day turned aside 36 shots between the pipes for Niagara before leaving the game in overtime due to injury.

Porter notched his second overtime winner of the season midway through the extra session as he beat Niagara backup keeper Thomas Anderson with a shot to the blocker side on a 2-on-1 rush moments after Anderson entered the game for Day.
Trailing 3-0 midway through the contest, Porter started the Griffs comeback with a power-play goal at the 12:13 mark of the second period, beating Day with a one-timer from the top of the right face-off circle.

Zacher brought Canisius within one just past the five-minute mark of the third when he redirected a shot from freshman FJ Buteau past Day for his team-leading 14th goal of the season.
Kincaid tied the game with 11:15 elapsed in the third, firing a wrist shot over the right shoulder of Day from the top of the right face-off circle to knot the score at 3-3 and send the game to overtime. Earlier in the contest, Niagara scored twice in a one-minute span late in the first to grab a 2-0 lead. Roloson opened the scoring at the 15:50 mark of the first when he put home a rebound after the initial shot off the stick of Noah Hackett was turned aside by Wickström Stumer.

Maillett doubled the Purple Eagles advantage moments later, redirecting a point shot from Dallon Melin into the upper right-hand corner of the net for his fourth goal of the season.

Young expanded the Niagara margin to 3-0 less than two minutes into the third when converted on a shorthanded breakaway, providing the setting for the Griffs' come-from-behind victory.
