Women's Basketball Suffers Road Loss at Sacred Heart

Three Pioneers finished in double figures to guide Sacred Heart to a 77-61 win over Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at the William H. Pitt Convocation & Athletic Center in Fairfield, Conn.

Sacred Heart improved to 6-8 overall (4-1 MAAC) with the home victory. The Golden Griffins, meanwhile, fell to 2-11 overall (0-4 MAAC) with the loss.

Sophie Nascimento led the way for the Pioneers with a game-high 24 points and six rebounds. Nalyce Dudley chipped in 20 points of her own while Amelia Wood scored all 15 of her points in the second half.

Junior Mary Copple led Canisius with 11 points on the afternoon. Sophomore Yasmine Djibril helped out, adding 10 points. Four Golden Griffins notched a team-high four rebounds each as Canisius out-rebounded Sacred Heart, 29-28.

With Canisius leading 39-34 with 5:51 remaining in the third quarter, Sacred Heart took control of the contest with a 20-4 run that lasted until the end of the third quarter and gave the Pioneers a 54-43 advantage heading into the fourth. Wood led the way during the game-changing spurt, accounting for half of the Pioneers' 20 points tallied in the final five-plus minutes of the third.

The teams exchanged baskets during the duration of the fourth quarter, allowing Sacred Heart to secure the 16-point victory.

Earlier in the contest, Canisius grabbed a 17-14 lead during the first quarter thanks in large part to a trio of 3-pointers made in the period. The Pioneers matched the Griffs in the second stanza, out-scoring the Blue and Gold by a 14-11 margin to even up the game at 28-28 heading into the halftime break, setting the stage for the Stags third-quarter run.
