Women's Basketball Comeback Falls Short at Marist

Sophomore Yasmine Djibril scored a career-high 16 points, but it was not enough as Marist recorded a 60-53 win over Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's basketball action Thursday evening at McCann Arena in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

The Red Foxes improved to 8-14 overall and 5-7 in the MAAC with their sixth home victory. The Golden Griffins, meanwhile, fell to 3-17 overall and 1-10 in conference play with their fourth consecutive loss.

Marist's Danielle Williamsen led the way for the home team with a team-best 15 points while teammate Justine Henry chipped in 14 points of her own as the Red Foxes went 38.3% (23-for-60) from the field and 29.2% (5-for-17) from three point range. Ciara Crocker grabbed a team-best eight rebounds.

Jabril was the only Canisius player to reach double figures as sophomore Irene Rey Pineda recorded nine points. Junior Shariah Gailes pulled down a game-best nine rebounds as the Griffs enjoyed a 46-32 advantage on the glass. Canisius also bested Marist in the paint by a 32-24 margin. The Griffs shot 33.3% (19-for-57) from the field and just 20.0% (3-for-15) from downtown.

Holding a 10-9 lead after the first quarter, Marist took control of the contest in the second stanza as it scored the first nine points of the frame to spark a 21-2 run that helped the Red Foxes establish a 34-18 lead heading into the halftime break. Five different Marist players found the scoresheet during the game-changing run, highlighted by six points each from Williamson and Henry.

Canisius battled back in the third quarter, out-scoring the Red Foxes by a 19-5 margin during the frame to pull within two, 39-37, heading into the fourth. The Griffs knocked down eight of their 12 field goals attempts during the spurt, with three players - Jabril, senior Franka Wittenberg and junior Antionique Auston - leading the way with five points each.

Marist built up its lead once again during the opening stages of the fourth quarter, starting the frame with a 14-5 spurt which increased the margin to 11 for the home side. The Blue Gold battled back when a pair of free throws from Gailes ignited a 7-2 stretch that trimmed the Marist lead to 55-49 with just over two minutes remaining.

With Canisius forced to foul, the Red Foxes capitalized on their free throws, going 3-for-4 from the charity stripe in the final 30 seconds to secure the victory.
