Siena's Overtime Comeback Sinks Women's Basketball

Siena scored the final seven points in overtime to post a 69-65 victory over Canisius in MAAC women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at the UHY Center in Loudonville, N.Y.

Siena's Francesca Schiro made three free-throws with 18 seconds left in the extra period to give the host Saints the lead for good. Schiro finished the day with a game-high 24 points to go with eight assists, six rebounds and two steals as Siena improved to 9-12 overall and 7-5 in league play with the victory.

 
Senior Franka Wittenberg scored a season-high 20 points for the Golden Griffins, while junior Shariah Gailes added 16 points and nine boards for Canisius, which fell to 3-18 overall and 1-11 in conference action. Sophomore Yasmine Djibril scored eight points, while grabbing a team-high 10 rebounds in a contest, as the Griffs out-rebounded the Saints, 45-41, with 18 of those boards coming off the offensive backboard. 

Trailing 54-52 with 16 seconds left on the clock in regulation time, Canisius was able to force an extra session after Gailes scored a bucket from the paint with two seconds left to play. After the two teams traded 3-pointers to start the overtime session, Siena scored five of the game's next six points to take a 62-58 lead with 3:10 left on the overtime clock.

Canisius answered Siena's scoring surge with a 7-0 run over the game's next 90 seconds, with Wittenberg scoring five of the Griffs' seven points in the push. She started the Griffs' run with her only 3-point make of the day, and then she extended the Blue and Gold's advantage to 65-62 with a bucket off an assist from sophomore Corniya Clay with 1:25 left in the contest.   

A pair of free-throws by Siena trimmed the Griffs' lead to 65-64 with 53 seconds left. After a Canisius turnover, Schiro was fouled attempting a 3-pointer, and she who cashed in all three of her chances from the stripe to give the Saints a two-point advantage  at 67-65 with 18 seconds left. On Canisius' ensuing possession, Schiro stole the ball, which set-up a layup from Jamariah Turner to seal the victory for the Saints.

GAME NOTES

• Canisius and Siena met for the second time this season and 87th time in all-time series history. Prior to Saturday, the last meeting in the series that went to overtime was played on Feb. 22, 2019.
• Saturday was the first overtime game of the season for Canisius, and the team's first since Feb. 20, 2024.
• Canisius out-scored Siena in the paint, 28-26.
• Gailes tallied her 500th point as a Griff.
• Wittenberg posted her second career game with 20-or more points in the scoring column.
• Gailes was one rebound shy of her third double-double of the season, and 10th of her career.

Canisius returns home to face rival Niagara on Tuesday might. Tip off inside the Koessler Athletic Center is slated for 6:30 p.m., and the game will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
