Women's Basketball Falls to Fairfield

Fairfield's Kaety L'Amoreaux scored a game-high 25 points to lead the visiting Stags to a 58-42 victory over Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's basketball action Saturday inside the Koessler Athletic Center in Buffalo, N.Y.

Fairfield improved to 17-3 overall as it remained unbeaten in conference play (11-0). Canisius, meanwhile, fell to 3-16 overall and 1-9 in league action with the loss.

L'Amoreaux went 9-for-20 from the field and drilled four 3-pointers for the Stags, who shot at a 36.2% clip (21-for-58) from the field and 27.3% (9-for-33) from downtown for the contest. Fairfield tallied 26 points off of turnovers as it forced Canisius to surrender the ball 26 times.

Senior Franka Wittenberg led the Golden Griffins with eight points and eight rebounds. Junior Ileana Feliz chipped in six points to round out the Canisius bench, who outscored Fairfield by a 20-8 margin. Canisius also led the battle on the boards, posting a 37-30 advantage over the Stags on the glass.

Fairfield scored 12 points in the opening stanza and held Canisius to just six before besting the Griffs once again in the second quarter to take a 23-16 lead into the locker rooms.

The Stags extended the lead out of the halftime intermission, out-scoring Canisius, 23-7, during the third quarter while going 42.8% (9-for-21) from the field and knocking down three shots from behind the arc.

Junior Kelsey Bess drained a three pointer to start the fourth quarter before Fairfield quickly responded with a three of their own and a layup to extend their lead. A pair of free throws made by junior Shariah Gailes ignited a 16-7 run that lasted until the final horn to determine the 16 margin of defeat for Canisius.

GAME NOTES
• Canisius and Fairfield met for the 73rd time in series history Saturday.
• Wittenberg led the team in scoring for the second time this season and first occasion since Dec. 19.
• Canisius recorded five blocks in the contest. Wittenberg led the way, denying four of the Stags shots.
• The two sides finished tied for points scored in the paint, 22-22.
• Canisius held Fairfield to their lowest point total this season.
