Women's Basketball Comes Up Short Against Sacred Heart

Four Pioneers finished in double figures to guide Sacred Heart to a 76-55 win over Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's basketball action Thursday inside the Koessler Athletic Center in Buffalo, N.Y.

Sacred Heart improved to 9-10 overall and 7-3 in conference play. Canisius, meanwhile, fell to 3-15 on the season and 1-8 in league action with the loss.

Sacred Heart's Amelia Wood scored a game-high 15 points and Sophie Nasciemento pitched in 14 for the visiting Pioneers. Nalyce Dudley chipped in 12 points and Esther Kursite added in 10 to round out the quartet of double-digit scorers for Sacred Heart. As a team, the Pioneers knocked down 50% (27-for-54) of their field goals and connected on 43% (7-for-16) from deep.

Junior Shariah Gailes and sophomore Yasmine Djibril each tallied a team-high 14 points in the contest for the Griffs. Canisius outscored Sacred Heart in the paint, 40-30. The Griffs shot at a 40.4% clip (21-for-52) from the field and 10% (1-for-10) from three-point land.

Sacred Heart connected from behind the three point arc three times in the opening quarter on its way to a 23-12 lead after 10 minutes of play. 

The Pioneers maintained a double-digit advantage for the majority of the second quarter as the teams exchanged baskets to allow Sacred Heart to carry a 36-26 advantage into the locker room. 

A 17-8 run to close the third quarter capped a frame that saw Sacred Heart out-score Canisius by a 22-11 margin as it built its lead to 58-37 heading into the final frame. Back and forth action in the fourth allowed the Pios to maintain the 21-point cushion as they finished off the 76-55 victory.

GAME NOTES
• Canisius and Sacred Heart met for the fourth time in series history Thursday.
• Gailes ended the contest one rebound shy of notching her third consecutive double-double.
• Canisius recorded eight steals in the contest. Senior Franka Wittenberg, sophomore Corniya Clay and Djibril all tallied two swipes apiece.
• The Griffs shot at a 85.7% clip (12-for-14) from the charity stripe.
• Canisius put away 58.3% (7-for-12) of their field goal attempts in the final quarter.
• Clay's 31 minutes marks the eight time that the Toledo, Ohio native has played 30-or-more minutes this season.
• Eight Griffs found their way onto the scoresheet Thursday.

Canisius welcomes two-time defending MAAC champion Fairfield to the Koessler Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon. Tip off is slated for 1 p.m. and the contest will air on ESPN+.
