Acrobatics and Tumbling

Acrobatics and Tumbling Elevated to NCAA Championship Sport

Acrobatics and Tumbling was elevated to an NCAA Championship sport, sixteen years after its inception, NCATA announced at the NCAA Convention in Maryland earlier this week.

Across the three divisions, 47 universities currently sponsor acrobatics and tumbling with more than 1,300 student-athlete participants.

The National Collegiate Acrobatics & Tumbling Association (NCATA) was formed in 2010 and hosted the first NCATA National Championships in the spring of 2011. Prior this weeks vote, acrobatics and tumbling was tabbed as an emerging sport which are recognized by the NCAA but are not a NCAA governed sport.

This week at the NCAA Convention, all three divisions voted to establish a National Collegiate championship for Acrobatics & Tumbling with the inaugural championship taking place in the spring of 2027. The NCAA Women's Acrobatics & Tumbling Committee will be established as a specific sport committee charged with overseeing the championships and playing rules responsibility. Administrators and coaches from NCAA member institutions are eligible to serve on the committee. The committee will be charged with determining the format and date of the championships as well as oversee the bid process for hosting championship events.

The Canisius acrobatics and Tumbling program opens its inaugural season on Feb. 22, playing host to Buffalo State.
