Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Hot-Shooting Second Half Leads Mount St. Mary’s Past Men’s Basketball

Mount St. Mary's used an 11-2 run over the span of 4:50 in the second half to turn a one-possession game into an 11-point cushion, as the Mountaineers posted a 78-68 win over Canisius in MAAC men's basketball action Saturday afternoon at the Koessler Athletic Center.

With the win, Mount St. Mary's improved to 7-12 overall and 3-5 in league play, while the Golden Griffins fell to 8-11 overall and 3-5 in conference action with their third-straight loss.

Mount St. Mary's guard Arlandus Keyes scored 12 of his game-high 22 points in the game's second half to help lead the Mountaineers to their first MAAC road victory of the season. Trey Deveaux added 16 points and Luke McEldon chipped in 10 points and seven boards in the winning effort. For the game, the Mount shot 55.8 percent from the field, highlighted by a 60 percent clip in the second half, and made 8-of-19 tries from 3-point land.

For Canisius, junior Bryan Ndjonga scored 22 points to lead the Griffs' offense, and he also pulled down a game-high eight rebounds to go with a career-best five assists. Ndjonga went 8-for-16 from the floor and knocked down four 3-pointers, while also recording a pair of blocked shots and a steal. Fellow junior Kahlil Singleton scored 21 points on the power of four makes from behind the 3-point arc, and graduate student Max Jusianiec came off the bench to add eight points. Canisius, which made 13 3-pointers in the game, ended the contest by shooting 40 percent (24-for-60) from the floor.

The two teams came out of the gate red-hot, as the Griffs and the Mountaineers combined for 37 points in the contest's first 8:58, and Canisius led 21-16 at that point. A 3-pointer by Ndjonga from right in front of the Mount St. Mary's bench with 7:39 left in the opening half drove the Blue and Gold's lead to seven at 24-17, but Deveaux and Keyes scored the game's next five points for the visiting team to trim the Griffs' lead to 24-22 with 6:24 left before halftime. Canisius went into the locker room up one at 34-33 after the Griffs hit eight 3-pointers in the first 20:00.

Canisius and Mount St. Mary's traded the lead back-and-forth four times in the opening 3:15 of the second half before the Mountaineers took the lead for good with 16:27 left in the game thanks to a 3-pointer from Keyes, one of his four makes from downtown on the afternoon. Keyes followed that trey with another triple moments later, and a fastbreak lay-up by Mason So put the Mount up 49-42 with 13:59 left on the clock.

A turnaround jumper by Ndjonga with 10:18 left in the contest trimmed Mount St. Mary's advantage to 53-51, but that would end up being the Griffs' last field goal for the next 6:26. In that cold snap, Mount St. Mary's pulled away with the 11-2 run. A dunk by Ndjonga with 3:52 got the Griffs within 11 at 66-55, but the Mountaineers answered with the game's next four points to stretch their hold to 70-55 with 2:42 left to play.

Four different Mount St. Mary's players had five-or more rebounds in the victory, as the Mountaineers out-rebounded the Griffs 38-26 for the game. Canisius was able to turn 15 Mount St. Mary's turnovers into 19 points, but the Mount ended up outscoring Canisius 36-16 in the paint.
