Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Comes Up Short at Sacred Heart

Canisius junior Kahlil Singleton scored a game-high 20 points and graduate student Myles Wilmoth recorded a double-double with 15 points and a career-high 14 rebounds, but it was not enough for the Golden Griffins, as the Blue and Gold fell on the road to Sacred Heart 69-66 in MAAC men's basketball action Thursday night in Fairfield, Conn.

With the win, Sacred Heart's third straight, the Pioneers improved to 8-13 overall and 4-6 in MAAC play, while the Griffs slipped to 8-12 overall and 3-6 in league action with their fourth-straight loss.

A 3-pointer by Singleton, his sixth make from behind the arc on the night, with 5:03 left in the contest, put Canisius ahead 59-56. From there, however, Sacred Heart went on a 10-0 run over the game's next 2:36 to make the score 66-59 in favor of the home team. A bucket by junior Mike Evbagharu with 1:54 remaining ended the Griffs' scoreless stretch and trimmed the Pioneers' lead to five at 66-61, but with just 39 ticks left on the clock, reigning MAAC Player of the Week Anquon Hill drained a pair of free-throws to drive Sacred Heart's lead back to seven at 68-61.

After Canisius took its final timeout, Wilmoth knocked down a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 30 seconds remaining to cut the Sacred Heart advantage to 68-64. Sacred Heart missed the front-end of a 1-and-1 at the free-throw line with 26 seconds left, allowing Canisius to chip away at the Pioneer lead, as junior Bryan Ndjonga scored a lay-up on the fastbreak off an assist from Wilmoth, making the score 68-66. Canisius fouled Sacred Heart on the ensuing in-bounds play, allowing Nyle Ralph-Beyer to head to the free-throw line with a chance to ice the game for the Pioneers. However, Ralph-Beyer made just one of two free-throws to make the score 69-66, giving Canisius one last shot to tie the game and send it to overtime.

On their final possession, Canisius scrambled to get off a shot with the clock winding down, and Wilmoth's 3-point attempt from the top of the key with less than five seconds left on the clock bounced high off the back-iron as time expired.

Singleton ended the night by going 6-for-17 from the field and 6-for-13 from 3-point range to go along with a pair of rebounds and a pair of assists. Wilmoth made a season-high three 3-pointers in the loss, and 10 of his game-high 14 rebounds came off the defensive glass. Evbagharu scored 14 points on 7-of-12 shooting, and he also pulled down seven boards to go with four assists and three steals. As a team, Canisius shot 39.7 percent from the field, despite making 12-0f-30 shots from 3-point land.

For Sacred Heart, Ralph-Beyer scored a team-high 19 points, while Dashon Gittens chipped in 16 points and seven rebounds. Guard Mekhi Connor scored six points and grabbed four rebounds, while accounting for 12 of Sacred Heart's 19 assists on the night. For the game, the Pioneers shot 43.1 percent from the field, highlighted by a 50 percent effort in the game's second half, and the team made 13-of-32 tries from behind the 3-point arc.
