Fourth Quarter Outburst Pushes Mount St. Mary's Past Women's Basketball

Three Golden Griffins scored in double-figures, but a late surge by Mount St. Mary's proved to be the difference as The Mount recorded a 71-64 victory over Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at Knott Arena in Emmitsburg, Md.

With the win, Mount St. Mary's improved to 8-9 overall and 4-4 in conference play. Canisius fell to 3-14 overall and 1-7 in league action with the setback. 

Without the services of leading scorer Gabrielle Kennerly, Mount St. Mary's turned to the duo of Giana Hoddinott and Amber Bullard, who recorded 16 and 15 points, respectively. Kayla Lindsey was credited with a team-high five steals as the Mountaineers forced Canisius to turn over the ball 31 times. The Mount shot at a 40.3% clip (27-for-67) from the floor and 33.3% (5-for-15) from three point range. 

Junior Shariah Gailes scored a team-high 16 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to complete her second straight double-double. Sophomore Yasmine Djibril recorded 14 points and senior Franka Wittenberg finished with 11 to round out the trio of Golden Griffins in double figures. As a team, Canisius went 44.4% (20-for-45) from the field and 33.3% (5-for-15) from downtown.

Canisius outscored Mount St. Mary's 18-14 in the opening stanza, highlighted by five points apiece from junior Kelsey Bess and Gailes. Mount St. Mary's responded in the following quarter, holding a 20-14 advantage during the frame to take a 34-32 lead into the halftime break.

In the third quarter, Canisius opened the period with a 14-5 run to build up a seven-point lead, its largest of the afternoon. 

With 2:24 remaining in the third quarter, The Mount began a 7-1 run that lasted until the end of the period that tied the game at 49-49 heading into the final frame.

Gailes opened the fourth with a driving layup to break the tie before Wittenberg nailed a jump shot in the ensuing possession to take a 53-49 advantage with 9:07 left on the clock. From that point, the Mountaineers exploded for a 12-2 run to take a 61-55 lead just under the five minute mark.

Djibril broke the Blue and Gold out of its offensive slide, cashing in back-to-back layups and drawing the Griffs within two. Four turnovers in the final four minutes proved keep the Griffs from getting any closer, allowing Mount St. Mary's to knock down eight free throws in the final minutes to secure the victory.


GAME NOTES
• Wednesday's contest marked the 12th all-time meeting between the two programs.
• The Griffs out-rebounded the Mountaineers, 38-33. Eight Canisius players recorded a rebound in the game.
• Canisius' 18 points in the first quarter matcheed the most points in a quarter for the Griffs in a MAAC game this season.
• Gailes' double-double was the ninth of her career.
• The Blue and Gold knocked down a season-high 19 free throws.
• Canisius shot 40%-or-higher from the field for the ninth time this season.
• Gailes' sits 36 points away from the 500-point milestone at Canisius.
