Volleyball Drops Doubleheader to Wrap Up UAlbany Invitational

Canisius dropped both of its matches against Cornell and UAlbany on Saturday to close out its appearance in the UAlbany Invitational at the PE Gym in Albany, N.Y.
 
The Golden Griffins started the day with a four-set loss to the Big Red (12-25, 27-25, 19-25, 14-25) before suffering a five-set setback to the host Great Danes (25-21, 29-27, 18-25, 23-25, 11-15).
 
CORNELL RECAP
In the team's first match of the day, Canisius was led by sophomore Perry Stevenson, who registered a career-high 15 kills. Senior setter Ella Bourque was credited with 33 assists.
 
Cornell jumped out to a commanding 20-8 lead on its way to taking the initial set, 25-12. With the Big Red leading by a 22-17 margin in the second set, Canisius hammered home six consecutive points to level up the frame en route to a 27-25 victory.

Cornell claimed the third set, 25-19, using a 6-1 run to finish out the frame. The Big Red continued its domination in the final frame, stringing together multiple runs to take the set, 25-14, and secure the win. 

Eliza Konvicka recorded a match-high 19 kills for Cornell, which hit .355 as a team in the four-set victory. 

 
UALBANY RECAP
Canisius suffered a comeback loss at the hands of the Great Danes as UAlbany's Shynelle Woroniuk tallied a match-high 23 kills. The Griffs were led by freshman Madi Cowan, who put down a career-best 20 kills. Bourque aided the cause, tying her career-high with 55 assists, while junior libero Brenda Reynaga registered a team-best 25 digs.
 
The Griffs took the first set by a 25-19 margin after hitting .306 as a team in the opening frame. The second set saw UAlbany jumped out to a 9-4 lead before the Griffs used an 11-2 run to take a 15-9 lead. UAlbany was able to fight back to even the frame at 22-22. Both sides continued to trade points past the 25-point mark until redshirt sophomore Julia Lenik registered an ace following a kill from senior Bella Mosquera to win the set, 29-27.

Albany clawed back into the match, winning the third set, 25-18, and taking the fourth by a 25-23 margin to force a decisive fifth frame.

In the deciding set, Albany jumped out to a 10-6 lead, forcing a Canisius timeout. The Blue and Gold strung together five straight points to even the set before UAlbany exploded for four straight kills to close out the contest and secure the victory.

MATCH NOTES
• Canisius faced Cornell for the 11th time in program history on Saturday. The two sides hadn't seen each other since 2019.
• The Griffs faced UAlbany for just the second time in program history.
• Cowan's 20 kills against UAlbany marked the most kills by a Canisius freshman in a match since Claire Leonard recorded 22 kills against Iona on Oct. 29, 2017.
• Lenik recorded a career-high 15 kills and 22 digs in the nightcap against UAlbany.

UP NEXT
Canisius finishes out non-conference play Sept. 12-13 in the Binghamton Invitational at the Events Center in Binghamton, N.Y. The Griffs will play Mercyhurst, Bucknell and host Binghamton in the two-day event.
