Volleyball Falls Twice on First Day of Bearcat Invitational

The Canisius volleyball team dropped both of its matches against Bucknell and Binghamton on Friday to kick off the Bearcat Invitational at the Events Center in Vestal, N.Y.
 
The Golden Griffins (1-7) suffered a four-set defeat to the Bison (14-25, 22-25, 25-20, 15-25) to open the tournament before falling to the host Bearcats in three sets (16-25, 9-25, 19-25) in the nightcap.
 
BUCKNELL RECAP
In the first leg of the doubleheader, the Bison jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the match before Canisius strung together multiple runs in the third frame to build a 20-14 lead late in the set. With Canisius forcing set point, Bucknell rallied for three straight scores to draw within four, however, a kill from senior Bella Mosquera sealed the a 25-20 victory for Canisius to extend the match.
 
The fourth set saw Bucknell use a 7-2 run midway through the frame to cruise to a 25-15 victory and claim the match.

Sidney Schaffner recorded a match-high 18 kills for Bucknell, which hit .304 as a team. Caleigh O'Connell tallied a match-high 44 assists.

For Canisius, freshman Madi Cowan recorded a team-high 14 kills while senior Ella Bourque dished out 34 assists.
 
BINGHAMTON RECAP

Canisius suffered a sweep at the hands of the host Bearcats as Merima Smajlovic tallied a match-high 14 kills. The Griffs were led by senior Bella Mosquera and freshman Julia Lenik who each put down nine kills. Bourque aided the cause with 34 assists while junior libero Brenda Reynaga registered a team-best 11 digs.
 
Holding 14-12 lead midway through the opening frame, the Bearcats took control of the first set as it claimed 11 of the final 15 points of the the frame to grab a 25-16 victory and a 1-0 lead in the match. Binghamton kept the foot on the gas in the second set, beginning the second frame with a 10-2 run to cruise to a 25-9 triumph and a 2-0 lead. 

Binghamton grabbed the momentum early in the third set, grabbing a 15-8 lead midway through the frame en route to a 25-19 victory and the the sweep.

MATCH NOTES
• Canisius matched up with Bucknell on Friday for the third time in the past five years and the 17th time in program history.
• The Griffs' nightcap with Binghamton was the 10th all-time match between the two schools and the first time Canisius has faced the Bearcats on the road since 2003.
• Holding the fourth-most assists in program history, Bourque has dished out 2,968 helpers in her career. The Yorkville, Ill., native sits 32 assists shy of the 3,000-assist milestone and 740 out of third place all-time in program history held by former Griff Janelle Davis (3,708).
• Cowan has logged 39 kills in her last three matches, surpassing her combined total from the first five matches of the season.
