Syracuse Surges Past Volleyball

Redshirt freshman Skylar George recorded 12 kills on 27 swings for a .333 hitting efficiency while her teammate junior Tehya Maeva dished out 31 assists to help lead Syracuse to a 3-0 sweep of Canisius in the initial match of the UAlbany Invitational Friday in Albany, N.Y.

The Orange (5-0) remained undefeated on the young season as they won the match by scores of 25-22, 25-21, 25-7. With the loss, the Golden Griffins fell to 1-3 on the season.

For Canisius, senior Bella Mosquera recorded a team-high seven kills. Senior Kalia Reisma, redshirt sophomore Julia Lenik, sophomore Emma Isroff, and freshman Madi Cowan all recorded five kills each. Senior Ella Bourque finished with 22 assists in the losing effort while junior libero Brenda Reynaga recorded seven digs.

With the score tied at 22-22 in the first set, Kills from Sydnie Waller and George, coupled with a Canisius attack error, secured the opening frame for Syracuse, 25-22.
 
The second set saw Syracuse combined to record seven blocks en route to the 25-21 victory. The Orange started the third set with a 17-2 run on its way to a 25-7 triumph as they completed the sweep.
 
MATCH NOTES
• Canisius and Syracuse met for the 15th time in series history on Friday. The Griffs and the Orange have played in each of the last two seasons.
• As a team, Canisius was credited with 14 block assists. The Griffs have 12-or-more block assists as a team in each of their first four matches this season.
• Reynaga was limited to single-digit digs for the first time this season with seven digs on Friday. 
• The 22 assists by Bourque against the Orange grew her career total to 2,819, which is fourth all time in program history. Bourque trails third-place Janelle Davis by 1,003 assists.
 
UP NEXT
Canisius completes its appearance in the UAlbany Invitational with a pair of matches on Saturday. The Griffs square off with Cornell at 3 p.m. before taking on host UAlbany at 7 p.m. Both matches will stream on America East TV.
