Gailes Named Preseason All-MAAC

Canisius junior Shariah Gailes was named to the Preseason All-MAAC Third Team, as the MAAC officially unveiled its 2025-26 preseason awards Tuesday at the league's annual media day event at The Ocean Hotel in Atlantic City, N.J.

Gailes is the first Golden Griffin to earn Preseason All-MAAC honors since Sisi Eleko earned Preseason All-MAAC Third Team accolades before the start of the 2023-24 campaign.

The team's top returning scorer, Gailes scored in double-figures 13 times last season, highlighted by her season-high 20 points in a home victory over Merrimack on Feb. 8. In 29 games last season, the Brooklyn, Ohio, native grabbed a team-best 234 rebounds, which ranks third-best among sophomores in program history. She led the Griffs and ranked third in the MAAC with her 8.1 boards per game, and her 2.7 offensive rebounds per contest ranked second in the conference.

Gailes, who had eight double-double efforts last season, had 11 games with 10-or more rebounds. Eight of those 11 double-digit rebound performances came against conference rivals, including a pair of games where she pulled down 13 boards (at Niagara Jan. 30 and vs. Mount St. Mary's Feb. 15).

Gailes is joined on the Preseason All-MAAC Third Team by Alli Campbell and Cyanne Coe from Fairfield, Brianna Davis from Manhattan and Sacred Heart's Ameila Wood.

As a team, Canisius was picked to finish in ninth place with 69 total votes. Defending MAAC champion Fairfield was the coaches' unanimous choice to win the league again this season, while Quinnipiac was picked to finish second with 155 total points. Mount St. Mary's, Marist and Siena were picked to round out the top-five in the preseason poll, followed by Iona, Manhattan, Merrimack and the Griffs.

The Canisius women's basketball team returns eight letterwinners from last year's roster. The Blue and Gold will begin their season on Nov. 4 at Michigan and the team's 2025-26 home opener is set for Nov. 7 against Eastern Michigan.
