Former Swimmer Pokornowski Shines at USMS Summer Nationals

Former Canisius swimmer James Pokornowski recently completed an impressive streak as he posted his fifth and final victory in 25-29 age group of the 1500 free at the U.S. Masters Swimming Summer Nationals in Federal City, Washington.

A member of the Nickel City Splash Swim Team, Pokornowski claimed the 1500 title at the 2025 Summer Nationals with a time of 17:49.60, more than a minute ahead of his next closest competitor.

"It's quite exciting, Pokornowski told U.S. Masters Swimming after his victory. "I never expected to do it. I'm glad I did. It's a good feeling."

A four-year member of the Golden Griffin program, Pokornowski was a distance swimmer that recorded more than 15 first-place finishes during his collegiate career. He competed in the B final of the 1650 free at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships during his junior and senior seasons, earning a second-place finish (10th overall) in both races.

With the victory in Washington, Pokornowski has his sights set on trying to win another national championship in the 1500 at the 2026 Summer Nationals in Sacramento, California.
