Mead Named Co-Rookie of the Meet as Swimming and Diving Concludes MAAC Championship

Freshman Daphne Mead was named co-rookie of the meet as the Canisius men's and women's swimming and diving teams capped off its week with three more program best times and one top-three finish on the final day of competition in the 2025 MAAC Swimming and Diving Championships Saturday at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.

Overall, the Golden Griffins established six program records and posted two All-MAAC finishes over the course of the four-day meet. Mead was named co-rookie of the meet after placing third in the women's 400 IM and helping the 800 freestyle relay team that also featured sophomore Evie Leighton and seniors Brenna McLaughlin and Ashley Allaire post a third-place finish. On top of her All-MAAC honors, four of the six broken records for the Griffs were shattered by Mead, who now holds Canisius' top times in the 400 IM, 200 Backstroke, 200 Medley relay and 800 Freestyle relay.

Both the Canisius men's and women's teams finished in seventh place at the meet. The men's squad posted 205 points, while the women earned a score of 259 points. Niagara earned the top spot on both men's and women's sides of the pool while also garnering four major awards.

On top of Mead's impressive meet, McLaughlin also finished strong, besting her own record in the 200 backstroke with a time 2:03.28 for a fifth-place finish. Mead, swimming the same event, took fourth with a time of 2:02.13, earning her spot in the Griffs record books.

Junior Sam Vidal also bested his previous record in the 200 Breaststroke, taking fifth with a time of 2:00.14. He had previously set the school record in this event at the 2023 MAAC Championships.
