Golf, Takacs Finish Second at Little Three Championship

The host Niagara Purple Eagles held off a late charge by the Canisius golf team to secure the team title at the 71st edition of the Little Three Championship, played Wednesday at Niagara Frontier Golf Club in Youngstown, N.Y. Niagara won the team title, its first since 2003, with a two-round team score of 586 (+18), which was one stroke better than the Golden Griffins (587, +19).

Canisius junior Mikey Takacs posted a two-round score of 140 (-2) to take second place behind individual medalist Ben Herbert from Niagara. After shooting a two-over par score of 73 in the opening round, Takacs matched a career-low with his second-round score of 67 (-4), which was the lowest score for any golfer in the field for the 48-hole tournament. The second-place finish for the Iowa City, Iowa, native serves as his second career top-five tournament finish. Last year, Takacs shot a 142 (-2) and tied for individual medalist honors at the 2024 Little Three Championship.

Freshman Blake Furtney, who played as an individual for the Griffs, placed fifth in the field with his two-round tally of 145 (+3). Sophomore Chase Burgess shot a two-round score of 147 (+5) to earn a tie for sixth, while junior Jacob Dantonio tied for eighth in the field with his score of 148 (+6).

St. Bonaventure, which entered Wednesday's tournament having won eight-straight Little Three team Championships, placed third in the field with a team score of 588 (+20). The Little Three Championship is the third-longest running collegiate golf tournament in the nation.

The Griffs will return to action Sept. 29-30 at The Virtues Intercollegiate, hosted by Bowling Green, in Nashport, Ohio.
