The Canisius men's and women's cross country team looks to build on its strong start to the season Friday at the National Catholic Invitational, hosted by Notre Dame. The men's 8k race is slated for 3:30 p.m., while the women's 5k will take place beginning at 4:15 p.m.

The Golden Griffins are making their second consecutive and 42nd overall appearance in the event after not competing in the 2023 edition of the race. Last season, Canisius turned in a pair of top-10 team finishes, with women taking fifth and the men's team placing eighth.

Both teams opened the 2025 season at the Little Three Invitational Sept. 6 in Olean, N.Y. In the annual race that pits the Griffs against regional foes Niagara and St. Bonaventure, the men's team captured its 19th straight title and the women placed third.

Senior Kyle Urban led the men's team with a second-place finish at the Little Three Championships, crossing the line at 14:44.6. The Griffs also had six other runners - sophomore Nathaniel Fisher, senior Brody Jones, freshman Daniel Granville, sophomore Ryan Giglia, sophomore Fenway Breckels and sophomore Adam Kozman - all finishing within the top 10.

Sophomore Clara Sundberg took second place at the Little Three Championships with a time of 18:30.4. Freshman Julia Gullo placed fourth in her collegiate debut, and junior Ella Herman claimed eighth, giving the Griffs three runners in the top 10.
