Volleyball Comeback Falls Short Against Mercyhurst

Mercyhurst's Roslynn Guerra and Payton Melin each recorded a team-high 12 kills to help lead the Lakers to a five-set victory over Canisius in the final match of the Bearcat Invitational Saturday afternoon at the Events Center in Vestal, N.Y.

The Lakers (2-8) snapped a four-match losing skid as they won the match by scores of 25-19, 25-23, 18-25, 19-25, 16-14. With the loss, the Golden Griffins fell to 1-8 on the season.

For Canisius, senior Bella Mosquera recorded a match-high 14 kills to go along with four block assists, two service aces and an assist. Senior Ella Bourque finished with 37 assists in the losing effort, while junior libero Brenda Reynaga registered 14 digs.

With her 37 sets in the match, Bourque became just the fourth Griff, and the first since Cassidy Cerani in 2019, to reach 3,000 assists in her career.

Mercyhurst jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the match after the Lakers hit at a .632-clip as a team in the opening frame. In the second set, the Lakers trailed the Griffs 23-22 late in the frame before scoring three-straight points to earn the 25-23 set victory.

Canisius came out of the match break and scored eight of the first 10 points in the third frame en route to a 25-18 set victory. The trio of junior Kalia Reisma and freshmen Alli Farmer and Madi Cowan combined to score seven of the Griffs' points in the frame on kills, as the Blue and Gold hit .333 for the set. With the score level at 12-12 in the fourth frame, Canisius exploded for eight consecutive points via two kills by Farmer and three-straight aces from junior Hannah Kos en route to a 25-19 set victory.

In the deciding set, Canisius trailed Mercyhurst 12-9, but the Blue and Gold answered by scoring five consecutive points to take a 14-12 lead. Facing match point, Mercyhurst surged back with three-straight kills followed by a service ace on set-point to score the victory, 16-14, and end the match.
