Men's Soccer Drops Match at St. Bonaventure

St. Bonaventure scored two first-half goals to take control of the contest as it posted a 5-0 victory over Little Three foe Canisius in collegiate men's soccer action Wednesday at the Marra Athletics Complex in Olean, N.Y.
 
Ricardo Riddersberger Galan and Kyle Macfarlane each scored in the first half for the Bonnies (2-3-1) while Jesper Van Halderen added one and Seth Hammond netted two in the second half to determine the final margin of victory. Felix Schöne got the start between the pipes for St. Bonaventure and made one save to record his third shutout of the season.
 
St. Bonaventure opened the scoring in the sixth minute as Riddersberger Galan connected with a cross from Van Halderen, battled through traffic in the box, and tucked the ball into the upper corner to give the Bonnies the early lead.
 
The Bonnies doubled their advantage late in the first half, as Macfarlane converted a penalty kick opportunty in the 44th minute after Henrique Dias was called for a foul in the box.
 
St. Bonaventure extended its lead in the 51st minute as a long cross from Hammond found a streaking Van Halderen, who fired the shot into the top right corner to make it a 3-0 contest.
 
Hammond continued the scoring in the 60th minute as Callum Shillington's cross found Hammond in the box, where he beat a pair of defenders to increase the Bonnies cushion to 4-0.
 
Hammond added his second goal of the match just three minutes later, finishing into the top-right corner from the middle of the box to close out the scoring.
 
Senior Preston Harold got the start for Canisius (1-3-1) in net, making three saves.
 
GAME NOTES
• Wednesday's matchup marked the 56th all-time meeting between Canisius and St. Bonaventure. The Bonnies now lead the series by a 29-18-9 margin.
• St. Bonaventure held a 19-6 advantage in shots taken in the contest, highlighted by an 8-3 advantage in the first half.
• The Bonnies took all three corners awarded in the contest.
• Freshman Gabriel Leslie earned the first start of his collegiate career.
 
UP NEXT
Canisius returns to action Sept. 17 when it hosts Mercyhurst. Kickoff for the match is set for 6 p.m. at the Demske Sports Complex.
