Nicolazzo Nets Two Goals as Men's Soccer Earns the Victory over Mercyhurst

Sophomore Romero Nicolazzo scored his first two career goals to lead Canisius to the 3-1 victory over Mercyhurst in collegiate men's soccer action Wednesday at the Demske Sports Complex.
 
Sophomore Gianni Angaran accounted for the third Golden Griffins tally (2-3-1), converting a penalty kick for his first goal of the season. Senior Glodie Mata recorded two assists while graduate keeper Dom Dominguez recorded four saves between the pipes.
 
Marcel Duffau scored his first goal of the season for Mercyhurst (0-4-2). Jaime Tedaldi made one stop in goal.
 
Mercyhurst opened the scoring in the 14th minute as Duffau converted a free kick after Dominguez picked up a foul just outside the the right side of the box.
 
Canisius responded in the 32nd minute after a Mercyhurst giveaway as Mata collected the loose ball and found Nicolazzo unmarked in the box, who slotted home his first career goal to tie the game at 1-1.
The Griffs took the lead in the 41st minute as Angaran converted on the penalty kick after the Lakers were called for a foul in the box to give the Blue and Gold a 2-1 edge.  Nicolazzo closed out the Griffs' first-half barrage in the 44th minute with his second goal of the night as Mata threaded a pass to a streaking Nicolazzo on the left side, where beat a pair of Lakers defenders before depositing the ball into the right side of the next to close out the scoring and secure the 3-1 victory.

GAME NOTES
• Wednesday's matchup marked the seventh all-time meeting between Canisius and Mercyhurst. The Lakers lead the series by a 5-1-1 margin.
• Mercyhurst held a 17-12 shot advantage, highlighted by a 9-8 advantage in the first half.
• Mercyhurst also held a slight 5-4 advantage in corner kicks taken on Wednesday.
• Nicolazzo recorded the first two goals of his career with his brace on Wednesday.
• Mata recorded the first multi-point game of his career as he collected the assists on both of Nicolazzo's goals.
• Dominguez made a game-high four saves in goal for Canisius.
 
UP NEXT
Canisius opens MAAC play Saturday when it travels to Lawrenceville, N.J., to square off against Rider. Kickoff between the Griffs and Broncs is set for noon at Ben Cohen Field.
