Volleyball Falls to Youngstown State in Three Sets

Youngstown State senior Abbie Householder had 13 kills and 11 digs and her teammate Layne Graffice put down 12 kills to go with 11 digs to help lead the host Penguins to a 3-0 sweep of Canisius in the final match of the YSU Invitational presented by Mercy Health Saturday afternoon in Youngstown, Ohio.

The Penguins (2-1) won the match by scores of 25-14, 25-18, 25-21. The Golden Griffins fell to 1-2 on the young season with the loss.


For Canisius, freshman Madi Cowan recorded a team-high seven kills to go with six digs and two block assists. Senior Bella Mosquera was good for six kills, four digs and two block assists, while redshirt-sophomore Julia Lenik and sophomore Emma Isroff added five kills apiece. Senior Ella Bourque had 27 assists in the losing effort, while sophomore libero Brenda Reynaga recorded a match-high 17 digs for the Blue and Gold.


In the first set, a service ace by Mosquera put the Griffs up 13-12, but the Penguins answered with eight-straight points to take a 20-13 lead. Two kills by Gabriela Machin and a service ace by Householder fueled Youngstown State's late scoring push to give the home team the 25-14 victory in set one.
 
In the second set, the Penguins hit .250 as a team and scored the first four points of the frame en route to the 25-18 victory. In the third set, Youngstown State scored three of the contest's final four points to earn the match victory.
 
For her efforts on the weekend, Mosquera was named to the YSU Invitational presented by Mercy Health All-Tournament Team. The West Chicago, Ill., native hit .371 in 11 sets for the Griffs, where she was good for a team best 2.82 kills per frame to go along with two solo blocks, 10 block assists and two service aces.
 
GAME NOTES
• Canisius and Youngstown State met for the 22nd time in series history. The Griffs and the Penguins have played in each of the last four seasons.
• As a team, Canisius was credited with 14 block assists. The Griffs have 12-or more block assists as a team in each of their first three contests this season.
• Reynaga posted double-digit digs in each of the team's three matches this weekend.
• The 27 assists by Bourque on Saturday marked the 65th time in her career that she has been credited with 25-or more assists in a match.
 
UP NEXT
Canisius will return to action Sept. 5-6 when the team travels to Albany, N.Y., to take part in the UAlbany Invitational. The Griffs' three-match weekend in New York State's capital city will start Sept. 5 when the team plays Syracuse. That contest is set to start at 3 p.m.
