Volleyball Scores First Win of 2025 Over Mercyhurst

The Canisius volleyball team began its 2025 season with a split against Duquesne and Mercyhurst on the opening day of competition in the YSU Invitational presented by Mercy Health in Youngstown, Ohio Friday.

The Golden Griffins started the day with a three-set loss to the Dukes (17-25, 21-25, 21-25) before emerging victorious with a five-set thriller over Mercyhurst (19-25, 25-22, 25-20, 11-25, 15-12)

DUQUESNE RECAP
In the team's first match of the season, Canisius was led by senior Bella Mosquera, who registered 11 kills on 21 swings. Senior Ella Bourque was credited with 20 assists in the losing cause.

Duquesne strung together multiple five-point runs to jump out to a 20-9 lead, eventually taking the first frame 25-17. After winning set two, the Dukes scored 11 of the first 15 points of the third set en route to the 25-21 victory to end the match.

Duquesne, which hit .288 as a team in the three-set victory, was led by Emerson Schrom, who recorded a match-high 15 kills.

MERCYHURST RECAP
In the nightcamp, Canisius scored its first win of the season by scoring the five-set victory over Mercyhurst. Mosquera once again led the way for the Griffs, as she tied her career-high with 14 kills on 27 attack attempts to hit at a .407 hitting percentage. Bourque aided the cause with a match-best 45 assists, while sophomore libero Brenda Reynaga registered a team-best 20 digs.

After Mercyhurst took the first set of the match, Canisius won the second and third sets to take a 2-1 lead over the Lakers. Mercyhurst responded in the fourth set by hitting .407 as a team to win that frame, 25-11.

In the deciding set, Canisius trailed Mercyhurst 7-4, but the Blue and Gold answered by scoring nine of the contest's next 10 points to take a 12-8 lead. In the scoring surge, six of Canisius' points came thanks to Mercyhurst attack errors. Canisius lead 13-12 late before a kill by freshman Alli Farmer got the Griffs up two at 14-12, and then Canisius secured the win moments later on a bad set by the Lakers.

Redshirt-sophomore Julia Lenik had 11 kills and two service aces in the win over Mercyhurst, while Farmer added nine kills, a solo black and two block assists in her first collegiate action.
