Rider Stifles Baseball to Take Series Opener

Brian Young hurled a complete-game shutout to pace Rider in a 6-0 victory over Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action Friday at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

Young allowed just three hits while striking out six as he picked up his seventh win of the season for the Broncs (29-15, 19-5 MAAC). Junior Sam Staerker was charged with the loss for the Golden Griffins (13-27, 9-15 MAAC) after walking three batters in the fourth inning that allowed Nick Shuhet single to score two runs. The Griffs posted three hits, coming off the bats of juniors Owen Silliman and Andrew Marcello and senior Trent Rumley

After both team were held without a hit for the first three innings, Rider opened the scoring with four runs in the fourth, walking the bases loaded and scoring two on Shuhet's single before adding two more runs later on in the frame with an RBI single from Matt Leahy.

Joe Tiroly added two more runs in the seventh inning as he hit his league-leading 16th home run of the season to close out the scoring. 

GAME NOTES
• Friday's contest marked the sixth time this season the Griffs have been shut out and 16th contest this season as they have been held to two runs or fewer. 
• Redshirt sophomore Thomas Zwirecki saw his 11-game hitting streak come to an end after going 0-for-3 on Friday.  
• The Griffs are 2-13 this season when walking seven-or-more batters.
• Zwirecki, redshirt senior Josh Niles and sophomore JC Spinosa all reach base on walks

The Griffs look to even the series against the Broncs tomorrow at 1 p.m. The action will be streamed live on the Golden Griffins Broadcast Network.
