Baseball Falls After Rider’s Ninth-Inning Rally

Rider plated three runs off RBI singles from Joe Tiroly and Kyle Neri in the top of the ninth inning to break a 3-3 tie and defeat Canisius, 6-3, Saturday in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference baseball action at the Demske Sport Complex in Buffalo N.Y.

The Broncs improved to 30-15 on the season with a league-leading 20-5 record in MAAC play. The Golden Griffins, meanwhile, slipped to 9-16 in league action with a 13-28 overall record.

Chris Montone picked up the win for Rider after holding the Griffs scoreless for 1.2 innings, putting the Broncs in position to take the lead in their final at-bat. Redshirt senior Ethan Hennessy was charged with the loss after giving up the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth.

Junior Mason Cisco provided the lone source of offense for Canisius with his three-run blast in home half of the fourth inning. Redshirt senior Josh Niles also had a productive day the plate, going 3-for-4 for a double and a stolen base.

The Broncs opened the scoring in the first at-bat of the contest as Anthony Paskell hit a lead-off home run before adding another run in the third on a sacrifice fly to grab a 2-0 edge.

The momentum shifted in the fourth as senior Trent Rumley and redshirt Sophomore Thomas Zwirecki both took free passes before Cisco pushed the Griffs in front with his home run.

Junior Felix Morin came on in the third and held the Broncs scoreless for the next three inning before allowing a Nick Shuhet RBI single that tied the game in the top of the sixth. In the ninth, the Broncs were able to spark a two out rally that scored three runs. Zach Silfies was able to strikeout the side in the ninth, keeping the Broncs' 6-3 lead intact for the win.
