Baseball Powers Past Mercyhurst

Redshirt Senior Josh Niles, redshirt sophomore Thomas Zwirecki and sophomore Eric Weeks all posted multi-RBI hits to pace Canisius in an 8-3 win over Mercyhurst in collegiate baseball action Tuesday at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

Weeks and Niles both finished with two hits and three RBI apiece while Zwirecki was 1-for-3 with two runs batted in for
the Golden Griffins, who earned a season sweep of the Lakers as they improved to 13-26 on the season in the win in their non-conference finale. Mercyhurst fell to 14-32 on the season with the road loss.

For the second consecutive midweek contest, freshman Brian Smith earned the win with two shutout innings of relief that featured four punch outs and just one batter to reach base. Nick Hamilton was charged with the loss after allowing five runs in the first three innings. Seniors Aaron Duffy and Clifton Genge combined with Smith to strike out seven Lakers in-a-row through the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

Mercyhurst held a 2-0 lead after plating single runs in its first two at-bats before Niles got the Griffs on the board in the home half of second inning with a three-run homer. Zwirecki followed Niles in the third with a two-run blast of his own before Weeks sealed the game in the seventh, clearing the bases with an RBI triple to center field.

After Niles put Canisius in front with his home run in the bottom of the second, the Lakers could not muster a rally, with Griffs pitching leaving 11 runners stranded to help secure the win.

GAME NOTES
• Niles' home run was his second of the season and eighth of his career.
• Zwirecki hit his seventh home run of the season and his fifth in his last eight games
