Siena Sweeps Baseball in Double Header

Siena took both games of a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader versus Canisius Friday at Connors Park in Loudonville, N.Y., holding off a late rally to post a 10-8 victory in the opener before recording a 6-5 come-from-behind victory in the nightcap to complete the sweep.

The Saints moved to 18-26 overall with a 14-9 conference ledger with the doubleheader sweep. The Griffs, meanwhile, fell to 11-26 and 8-14 in the MAAC.

Senior Trent Rumley led the way in both games for Canisius, going a combined 4-for-9 with three RBI on the day as he was the only Griff to record multiple hits in each game of the doubleheader. Junior Owen Silliman tallied a four RBI game in the early contest, going 2-for-6 while sophomore JC Spinosa also posted two RBI with a 2-for-6 outing in the first game.

GAME ONE RECAP
The Griffs took the lead in the first inning, with Silliman getting to third after a lead off single and being driven home by a Rumley sac fly. Siena's Jake Sparks tied the game at 1-all in the home half of the second with a solo homer.

Gavin Thorburn gave the Saints the lead in the bottom of the third inning with an RBI single through the left side. In the fifth, Siena was able to tack on another run with an RBI groundout to stretch the lead to 3-1.

The Saints broke the game open in the seventh inning, scoring four runs on a passed ball and a three-run homer from Josh Thompson to build a 7-1 cushion. The Griffs were able to get three runs back in the top of the eighth, scoring on a RBI groundout from Owen Silliman and a run-scoring single from JC Spinosa, cutting the deficit to three.

Siena responded in the home half of the eighth, scoring three more runs on an RBI groundout by Aidan Paradine and a two-run single from Noah Brooks to grab a 10-4 advantage.

The Griffs attempted to rally in the top of the ninth, ignited by a solo home run from Rumely to lead off the inning. The Griffs cut the lead to two runs after a bases-clearing triple off the bat of Silliman and an RBI single from Sipnosa, but could not complete the comback as the Saints held on for the series-opening win.

GAME TWO RECAP
Siena struck first in the night cap, manufacturing a run off an error in the first inning to grab an early lead. Junior Andrew Marecllo tied the game in the top of the second with a RBI single before the Griffs picked up three runs in the third inning, using RBI singles from Rumley and sophomore Eric Weeks alongside a bases-loaded hit by pitch from junior Tommy Sheridan to take a 4-1 lead.

The Griffs held the lead until the home half of the sixth inning when Siena responded with a four-run frame, highlighted by a Jake Sparks two-run homer, to jump back in front, 5-4. Redshirt sophomore Thomas Zwirecki tied the game with a solo shot in the top half of the seventh which was soon erased by a Noah Brooks RBI single in the home half of the inning, sending the Saints to the doubleheader sweep.
