Baseball Falls Short at St. Bonaventure

Senior Trent Rumley and sophomore JC Spinosa both tallied multi-RBI days at the plate, but Canisius could not overcome an early deficit as it suffered a 13-6 setback at Little Three rival St. Bonaventure in non-conference collegiate baseball action Wednesday at McGraw-Jennings Field in Olean, N.Y.

The Bonnies picked up the first win of the home-and-home series against the Golden Griffins, improving to 11-19 on the season. Canisius slipped to 6-19 with the loss.

Conor Wolf was credited with the win for St. Bonaventure on the mound after throwing 2.0 innings of relief, allowing one earned run and two hits. Freshman Brian Smith took the loss for Canisius after surrendering four runs in the third inning.

Spinosa posted the only multi-hit game for the Griffs, going 2-for-5 at the plate with a two-run home run in the top of the fifth inning. Rmley continued to produce for the Griffs in the clean-up spot, adding two RBI to increase his team-leading total to 29 on a 1-for-4 day at the plate that also included a sacrifice fly. Sophomore Justin Bremner and junior Owen Silliman also recorded hits for Canisius.

The Bonnies struck first in the third inning after Canisius starter graduate student Levi Abbott held them scoreless in the first two frames. Three consecutive RBI hits from Chris Hoalcraft, Jayce Tharnish and David Marshall staked SBU to a 4-0 lead before Rumley was able to hit a sacrifice fly that scored Silliman in the following inning to get the Griffs on the board.

St. Bonaventure increased its lead to 7-1 in the fourth, scoring on a fielder's choice, passed ball and RBI single from Marshall. Canisius cut their deficit to 7-5 in the top of the fifth, with Spinosa hitting his home run and Silliman driving in a run with a sacrifice fly.

Canisius added another run in the seventh inning with Rumley hitting an RBI single but the Bonnies squashed the Griffs rally by scoring six runs in the sixth and seventh innings to secure the win.
