Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Splits Double Header at Sacred Heart

Senior Trent Rumley and redshirt sophomore Ronan Glassford drove in two runs apiece to propel Canisius to a 5-3 victory over Sacred Heart in game two of a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader Friday at Veterans Field in Bridgeport, Conn.

The Pioneers (16-17, 10-7 MAAC) took game one of the doubleheader, posting a 4-0 shutout of the Golden Griffins (7-20, 5-8 MAAC).

GAME ONE RECAP
The Griffs were stifled by the Pioneers starter in the opener as Joey Thrombly surrendered just three hits and one walk in eight shutout innings of work before turning the ball over to PJ Rogan in the ninth, who hurled a scoreless frame to close out the contest.

The majority of the Sacred Heart runs came in the third inning with the Pioneers loading the bases before using three straight walks to grab a 3-0 lead. SHU tacked on an unearned run in the eighth on a fielding error to close out the scoring.

GAME TWO RECAP
Canisius took a 3-0 lead in the third as Rumley hit a two-run RBI double that plated Silliman and sophomore JC Spinosa before Glassford drove home junior Mason Cisco with a RBI groundout.

Sacred Heart responded with an RBI groundout of their own in the home half of the third, cutting the lead to two. The Pioneers continued to chip away at the Canisius lead in the sixth inning as Steak Newman hit an RBI single and tied the game at 3-3 in the seventh when he scored on a wild pitch.

The Griffs regained the lead in the eighth as Zwireck hit an RBI double off the right-center fence to score sophomore Eric Weeks. Canisius added some insurance in the ninth as junior Tommy Sheridan was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, giving the Griffs a 5-3 advantage.

Junior Owen Silliman went 2-for-4 in the afternoon game, with two runs scored and a double. Redshirt sophomore Thomas Zwirecki finished 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

Sophomore Joe LoPinto picked up the win for Canisius, pitching 2.2 innings of relief with one allowed run, to improve to 4-0 on the season. Redshirt senior Ethan Hennessy recorded his third save of the season after closing out the contest with a scoreless ninth.
