Baseball Evens Up Series with Win Over Mount St. Mary’s

Junior Felix Morin posted six strong innings of relief while redshirt sophomore Thomas Zwirecki went 4-for-5 at the plate with two home runs, two doubles and five RBI to power Canisius to a 10-2 victory over Mount St. Mary's Saturday in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference baseball action at the Demske Sport Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

The Golden Griffins evened up the series against the Mount with the win, moving them to 10-24 on the season with a 7-12 conference record. The Mount, meanwhle, fell 16-25 with a 10-10 MAAC ledger with the setback.

Morin earned the win, notching one of his best performances of the season by scattering four hits and two walks over 6.0 innings of work. He was helped by a scoreless two-inning start from senior Tyler Greenleaf, who struck out four, and sophomore Austin Kutz, who pitched a scoreless ninth inning to close out the game. Mountaineers starter Ryan Brown took the loss after allowing the go-ahead run in the second inning.

Zwirecki had a career day at the plate, hitting multiple home runs for the first time in his career. He was assisted by senior Trent Rumley, who went 3-for-4 with four runs scored and an RBI. Redshirt freshman Justin Bremner continued his hot stretch, hitting a home run in his third straight game and adding another RBI with a sacrifice fly. Juniors Andrew Marcello and Mason Cisco also tallied RBI hits for the Griffs.

Bremner got the scoring started in the second inning, putting the first pitch he saw over the left field fence for a solo home run. The Griffs' lead ballooned to 4-0 in the third when Cisco laced a double into right field that scored junior Owen Silliman and Zwirekci hit his first homer of the day, a two-run blast.

The Griffs tacked on two more runs in the fifth as Rumley roped a single to score sophomore JC Spinosa and Bremner took a sac fly to right field. Morin got into trouble in the top half of the sixth, loading the bases on walks and hit-by-pitches, but was able to limit the damage to one run.

The Griffs allowed another run on sac fly in the seventh to make it a 6-2 contest, but Canisus quickly took the runs back in the home half of the inning as Zwirecki hit an RBI double and Marcello drove him home with a single to stretch the lead back to six. Zwirecki punctuated the 10-2 win in the eighth with his second two-run homer of the game.
