Baseball Claims Decisive Run-Rule Win over Mount St. Mary’s

Canisius collected 12 runs on nine hits to earn a 12-2 mercy-rule win over Mount St. Mary's Sunday in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference baseball action at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

The Golden Griffins claimed their second MAAC series win of the season with Sunday's victory, moving to 8-12 in league action and 11-24 overall. The Mount fell to 16-29 on the season with a 9-12 conference record.

Senior Joe Abramson picked up the victory for Canisius, throwing 2.2 innings while allowing two runs and striking out a batter. Graduate student Levi Abbott went 2.1 scoreless innings in relief with two strikeouts while sophomore Joe LoPinto finished off the game with two scoreless innings. Owen Crowe was charged with the loss for the Mount after failing to record an out in the first inning.

All nine batters recorded a run, with sophomore JC Spinosa, junior Owen Silliman and junior Andrew Marcello posting two runs scored apiece. Redshirt sophomore Josh Niles led the Griffs with a 2-for-3 day at the plate with an RBI, and sophomore Eric Weeks posted a 2-for-5 outing with a walk-off RBI double in the seventh that sealed the run-rule win.

Canisius was able to take the lead in the home half of the first after scoring on a throwing error induced by a sacrifice bunt from redshirt sophomore Ronan Glassford. Redshirt sophomore Thomas Zwirecki continued his hot streak at the plate, hitting a two-run single to bring the score to 3-0 after the opening frame.

In the third, the Mount was able to cut the lead to one run after scoring on a sac fly and RBI double from Alex Mendes. This proved to be the only offense of the day for Mount St. Mary's as the Canisius pitching held them scoreless for the rest of the game.

The Griffs scored four in the bottom half of the third on a Niles RBI single, a two-run homer from Marcello and a wild pitch that scored Spinosa to build a 7-2 cushion.

Canisius continued the onslaught in the fourth, plating four more runs on a two-run single from Silliman and two walks with the bases loaded. The Griffs sealed the game in the home half of the seventh after senior Trent Rumley reached on a walk before scoring on Weeks' double to seal the 12-2 win.
