Baseball Falls to Mount St. Mary’s in Extra Innings

Mount St. Mary's manufactured two runs in the top half of the 10th inning and Max McCrary held the Canisius bats in check in the bottom half of the frame to earn a 6-4 extra-innings win Friday in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference baseball action at the Demske Sport Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

The Mountaineers claimed game one of the three-game set and improved to 16-24 on the season and 9-10 in MAAC play. The Golden Griffins, meanwhile, fell to 6-12 in league action with a 9-24 overall record.

McCrary took the win after coming in with one out in the ninth inning and worked out of a jam to force extra innings before inducing a game-ending double play in the tenth to seal the win. Redshirt senior Ethan Hennessy was charged with the loss after allowing two runs (one earned) in the 10th inning.

For the Griffs, redshirt freshman Justin Bremner went 1-for-5 at the plate, with his one hit being a game-tying home run in the 6th inning. Bremner also nailed two runners on the base paths from left field, earning outfield assists with throws to the plate and third base. Senior Trent Rumley finished with a 2-for-4 day at the plate, hitting a lead off triple and scoring a game-tying run in the seventh. Redshirt sophomore Thomas Zwirecki plated the other RBI for the Griffs with an RBI single to go 1-for-4 on the day.

Junior Sam Staerker opened the game for Canisius on the mound, holding the Mount scoreless for the first three innings with four punch outs. This allowed the Griffs to take an early lead, scoring on a throwing error and a RBI single from Zwirecki that brought home junior Mason Cisco to put the Griffs up 2-0 at the end of the first.

The Mount tied up the game in the fifth after Alex Mendes put runners on third and second with a double down the left field line. A groundout from Nick Flemming brought a run home, cutting the Griffs lead in half. The Mountaineers took the lead in the following inning when scored on a balk and RBI triple from Evan Meier.

Bremner tied the game with a solo home run in the home half of the sixth, putting the score at 3-3. The teams exchanged runs in the seventh as each scored on a wild pitch to put the score at 4-4.

Senior Peyton Consigli, who went 6.0 innings with four earned runs and five strikeouts, held the Mount in check in the eighth and ninth, leading the Griffs to extra innings. In the top of the tenth, Ty Fredo walked and stole second, allowing Nolan Book to drive him home for the go-ahead run. The Mountaineers added another run on a Canisius error to grab a 6-4 edge, after the Griffs failed to rally in the bottom half of the inning.
