Baseball Rolls Past St. Bonaventure

Junior Mason Cisco and sophomore Eric Weeks each hit grand slams while four players posted multi-RBI performances as Canisius powered its way to a 17-4 victory over St. Bonaventure in collegiate baseball action Tuesday at the Demske Sport Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

The Golden Griffins improved to 9-23 overall with Tuesday's non-conference win that also evened their season series with their Little Three rival and marked their second straight victory. The Bonnies, meanwhile, fell to 12-25 on the season with the loss.

Canisius used seven pitchers in the midweek contest, with the win going to freshman Brian Smith, who threw 2.0 innings while allowing one unearned run with one strikeout.

Weeks tallied six RBI in the contest, going 2-for-4 with a double, sac fly and walk-off grand slam that ended the game on the 10-run mercy rule in the eighth inning. Cisco went 1-for-3 and hit his grand slam in the third inning, punctuating a seven-run frame that put the Griffs up 11-3. Redshirt sophomore Thomas Zwirecki continued his hot hitting stretch, going 2-for-3 with four RBI, brought about by a two-run homer and two-run double. Redshirt freshman Justin Bremner also collected two RBI on a home run while going 2-for-4 at the plate.

Freshman Brayden Hy and senior Trent Rumely also scored five runs for the Griffs by drawing five walks combined on the day.

Trailing 1-0 after St. Bonaventure opened the scoring in the top half of the first, the Griffs immediately responded in the home half of the frame as Zwirecki gave Canisius the lead with a two-run double before Bremner hit a two-run home run to make it a 4-1 contest.

The Bonnies battled back in the second, scoring on a Jayce Tharnish RBI triple and David Marshall RBI single to cut the deficit to one.

The Canisius bats got going in the third inning, putting up seven runs on the Bonnies pitching. Zwireki tagged a two-run homer to begin the scoring followed by a Weeks double that scored Bremner. Cisco put a bow on the inning with a grand slam after the Bonnies walked the bases loaded.

St. Bonaventure put up an unearned run in the fifth off of another Canisius error but the Griffs stayed hot at the plate, with redshirt senior Josh Niles scoring on a wild pitch and Weeks driving in a run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning to stretch the lead to nine. The game ended in the eighth after Weeks hit a grand slam to put the Griffs up 13 and evoke the 10-run mercy rule.
