Baseball Edges Out Iona

Sophomore Joe LoPinto held Iona scoreless and punched out four batters over the final two innings to allow Canisius to hold on for an 8-7 victory in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference baseball action at the Demske Sports Complex Saturday in Buffalo, N.Y.

The Golden Griffins staved off a home sweep with the win, improving their record to 8-23 on the season and 6-11 in league action. Iona fell to 13-24 and 7-11 in MAAC play.

Graduate student Levi Abbott earned the win for Canisius, pitching 4.2 innings in relief while allowing five hits, four runs and striking out five batters. LoPinto recorded the two-inning save, striking out four of the six batters he faced. Senior Joe Abramson got the start for Canisius, throwing two scoreless innings with a strikeout.

Junior Mason Cisco led the charge at the plate for the Griffs, going 2-for-5 at the plate with two doubles and three RBI. Senior Trent Rumley posted a 3-for-5 day at the plate with a double and an RBI while junior Owen Silliman went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run in the third inning. Sophomore JC Spinosa scored two runs while going 1-for-3 with two walks.

The Gaels jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the third, as a bases-loaded walk brought home the first run of the frame before a James Kemp single and a fielder's choice from Sean Stephenson accounted for the final two runs.

The Griffs answered back in the home half of the third with Silliman's two-run bomb and an RBI double from Cisco to tie the game at 3-3.

Canisius took a brief lead in the fourth inning with redshirt senior Josh Niles hitting a double that scored freshman Brayden Hy after he led the inning with a walk. Stephenson responded in the next frame with a two-run shot that put the Gaels back in front, 5-4.

The Griffs put up four runs in the sixth inning with Niles and Silliman leading the inning with a hit-by-pitch and double, respectively. Spinosa brought home Niles with an RBI single and Cisco cleared the bases with a double to put Canisius in the lead 8-5.

Kemp pulled the Gaels within one with a two-run homer in the top of the seventh, but LoPinto held the Gaels in check for the final six outs to secure the one-run win.
