Iona Holds Baseball In Check

Two Iona pitchers combined to hurl a five-hit shutout in an 8-0 victory over Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference baseball action Friday afternoon at Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

With the win, the Gaels improved to 13-23 on the season and 7-10 in MAAC play. The Golden Griffins fell to 7-23 and 5-11 in league action.

Andrelys Payamps picked up the win on the hill for Iona after he allowed three hits to go with nine strikeouts and five walks in 6.2 innings. Justin Trinidad pitched the final 2.1 innings for the Gaels, surrendering just two hits and one walk while fanning three.

Junior Owen Silliman led Canisius with a hit and he drew two walks on the day, while sophomore JC Spinosa, redshirt sophomores Thomas Zwirecki and Justin Bremner and freshman Brayden Hy recorded up the other four hits for Canisius.

The Gaels took the lead in the bottom of the first with a two-run homer from Jordan Overton. Iona erupted for four runs in the third, as a pair of two-run home runs from James Kemp and Jayson Gonzalez extended the visiting team's lead to 6-0.

In the top-half of the eighth, Overton added an insurance run with a ground-rule double and Sean Stephenson connected on a solo homer in the ninth to bring the final score to 8-0.
