Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Reed’s Overtime Marker Lifts Men’s Lacrosse Past Iona

Sophomore Jordan Reed scored at the 1:48 mark of overtime to lift Canisius to a 9-8 victory over Iona in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's lacrosse action Saturday at Mazzella Field in New Rochelle, N.Y.

Reed was one of three Golden Griffins (6-8, 6-1 MAAC) to finish with three points as he added a pair of assists to his overtime winner. Senior Jaxon Fridge also tallied a goal and two assists while fellow sophomore Mason Wolford notched two goals and added one helper.

Junior Micah Hanson won 15-of-19 faceoffs and scooped up a game-best 10 ground balls. Senior goalie Tommy Kunz finished the contest with 14 saves.

Jimmy Kennedy and Matthew Dyszkiewicz each posted hat tricks for the Gaels (2-11, 1-5 MAAC). Jack Martinez dished out two assists while Denny Piekutowski posted 12 saves between the pipes for the home team.

Reed's overtime winner came on the third possession of the extra session after each team was unsuccessful in its first attempt in extra time.

The Griffs worked the ball around the perimeter until Fridge found Reed, who bounced a shot past Piekutowski from six yards out to give the Griffs' their fourth one-goal victory of league play and keep them in a tie for first place in the league standings.
Earlier in the contest, Canisius raced out to a quick lead as it used goals from three different players over the opening 5:55 of the game to grab a 3-1 edge.

The matchup then turned into a defensive battle, with the two sides combining for just three tallies over the remainder of the first half. Iona held the Griffs off the scoreboard for more than 22 minutes while scoring twice to tie the game before Wolford stuck with less than two minutes to play before the break to put Canisius in front, 4-3, heading into the locker room.

Canisius carried the momentum from the Wolford's goal into the second half, scoring the first three goals of the third quarter to take their largest lead of the game, 7-3, moments before the midway point of the third.

The Gaels fought their way back into the contest, rattling off the next five goals over a more than 18-minute span to take their first lead of the game, 8-7, with just under two minutes to play in the fourth.

Senior Patrick Mitchell was able to get the Griffs level before the end of regulation as he deposited a feed from Reed past the right hip of Piekutowski for his second goal of the contest, setting the stage for Reed's overtime heroics.
HEAD COACH MARK MIYASHITA'S POSTGAME COMMENTS
"A win is a win, especially in conference play. We will take that and keep moving forward. Obviously, there is some stuff that we've got to clean up in terms of how we shot the ball today, which wasn't very good, and then some of the decisions that we made just trying to do too much as individuals a couple of times. That's where we got to get back to basics; trusting one another in the game plan a little bit better. But we'll take the win and a chance to come home and close out the regular season next week.

"We tried to be individuals a little too much at times and didn't stick to playing with the tempo that we wanted to and that allowed them to get back into the game. We must take this as a good lesson about playing in tight games; you can't replicate that in practice and use it as a learning tool going into what's going to be a tough game against a really good Siena squad next weekend.

"Being in as many tight games as we have this season, we knew not to panic. If there was time on the clock, we knew we had an opportunity and a chance. The boys were able to come together and pull out the win."
