Baseball Falls in Series Finale at Sacred Heart

Three Sacred Heart pitchers combined to hurl a three-hit shutout over seven innings in a 13-0 victory over Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference baseball action Sunday at Veterans Field in Bridgeport, Conn. 

With the win, the Pioneers improved to 17-17 on the season and 11-7 in MAAC play. The Golden Griffins fell to 7-21 and 5-9 in league action.

Ryan Parker picked up the win for Sacred Heart, going 5.0 innings while allowing two hits, three walks and striking out three Griffs. Lou Stallone and Charlie Costello pitched the final two innings, surrendering just one hit and one walk while fanning three. 

Redshirt sophomore Ronan Glassford, redshirt senior Josh Niles and freshman Brayden Hy picked up the three hits for Canisius. Junior Mason Cisco drew two walks in four plate appearances. 

The Pioneers took the lead in the bottom of the first with an RBI double from Peter Link. SHU erupted for five runs in the second, as back-to-back home runs from Ronan Donahue and Alex Unger opened the scoring in the frame before Steak Newman puncuated the inning with a two-run double to extend the lead to 6-0.

In the fifth, Link added a solo home run and the scoring was rounded out with a six-run sixth that was highlighted by a grand slam by Chuck Tallman, punctuating a 13-0 win for the Pioneers.

GAME NOTES
• This marked the fifth time this season where the Griffs were held to three-or-less hits.
• Senior Trent Rumley snapped his 12-game hitting streak in the loss as he did not reach base in three plate appearances. 
• Canisius left nine runners on base compared to the Pioneers' five.
• Both of Sacred Heart's wins in the series were shutouts.

UP NEXT
The Griffs return to the Demske Sports Complex with a MAAC series against Iona April 17-19. The first two games of the series are scheduled for 3 p.m. starts while the finale is scheduled for a 4 p.m. first pitch.
