Game Recap: Baseball |

Cincinnati Scores Two Wins Over Baseball

Canisius freshman Bennett Cox recorded a pair of multi-hit games and redshirt-sophomore Thomas Zwirecki hit his first career homer run, but it was not enough for the Golden Griffins, as the Blue and Gold dropped a pair of non-conference games at Cincinnati on Friday evening.

In the first game, Cox went 2-for-5 with a run scored and Zwirecki popped his first career homer in the third inning, but the host Bearcats pounded out 15 hits of their own en route to a 13-5 victory. In the nightcap, three Cincinnati pitchers combined to scatter eight hits to go with 13 strikeouts as the Bearcats posted a 7-0 victory. Cincinnati improved to 8-6 on the year with the two wins, and Canisius fell to 0-8 with the pair of losses.

GAME ONE RECAP
Cincinnati opened the twinbill by scoring four runs over the first two innings to take a 4-0 lead heading into the third inning. In that frame, Zwirecki's solo homer over the fence in center got the Griffs on the board, and a two-run double down the left field line off the bat of Trent Rumley later in that inning cut the Bearcats lead to 4-3.

After the Bearcats added a single run in the home-half of the fifth, Canisius tied the game at 5-5 in the sixth on an RBI-groundout by Zwireck and a single to center off the bat of junior Andrew Marcello, which allowed junior Kadin Miller to score from second. After Marcello's hit, Cincinnati lifted reliever Christian Mitchelle for fellow reliever Carson Marsh, and Marsh promptly ended Canisius scoring threat with a strikeout.

In the Bearcats' half of the sixth, the home team scored four runs on two hits and a pair of sac-flies to make the score 9-5. Cincinnati tacked on three runs in the seventh and added an insurance run in the eighth the cap the game's scoring.

Marsh earned the win in relief for the Bearcats to improve to 2-1 on the year. Marsh tossed 1.1 innings of scoreless relief and fanned two. Canisius sophomore reliever Austin Kutz took the loss on the hill for the Blue and Gold after he allowed three runs on three hits to go with two walks in 0.1 innings of work. Starter Peyton Consigli posted a no-decision after he gave up five runs on nine hits to go with six strikeouts and three walks over 4.2 innings of action.

GAME TWO RECAP
After 4.5 innings of scoreless ball, the Bearcats took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth thanks to five hits in the frame en route to the 7-0 victory. In the sixth, Canisius had a pair of runners on with one out, but Bearcat hurler Adam Buczkowski got junior Tommy Sheridan to ground into a 4-6-3 double-play to end the inning and the scoring threat. Cincinnati scored twice in the bottom of the sixth and then added one final run in the eight to score the 7-0 victory.

Buczkowski earned the win for the Bearcats after he pitched 3.2 innings of scoreless relief where he scattered five hits and fanned five. He came on for Bearcat starter Adam Mrakitsch, who fanned seven Canisius batters in 4.2 innings. Canisius freshman Noah Albano took the loss in relief after he gave up four runs on six hits to go with a strikeout in 1.0 inning.

Cox had two of the Griffs' eight base hits in the losing effort, as all eight of Canisius' hits in the nightcap were singles. Rumley also registered two in the game for his third multi-hit game of the season.
