• Tournament #3
After a week off the Canisius softball program heads down to Pennsylvania to take part in the Penn State Invitational in State College, Pa. The Golden Griffins will face host Penn State, Fairfield and Lafayette March 7-9.
• Series History
The Griffs are currently at 1-4 against Penn State. The Griffs last played the Nittany Lions last season, where Penn State won 8-2. Canisius' only win against the Nittany Lions came back in 1990.
This will be the first time the Golden Griffins will take on Lafayette.
This will be the 87th and 88th matchups between Canisius Fairfield which see the Golden Griffins lead 48-38. The Griffs swept the Stags in the regular season last season 4-3(8), 7-1, while also beating them in the first round of the MAAC Championships 6-0.
• Outfielders Lead the Way
Sophomore Ella Johel and senior Alyssa Cloutier both have gotten off to a hot start in the Griffs first 10 games of the season. Johel leads the team in batting average with a .370 which currently sits fifth in the conference on 12 hits, while tacking on four stolen bases which is tied for ninth in the MAAC. Cloutier leads the team with eight stolen bases on eight attempts which is tied for the lead in the MAAC.
• Rookie of the Week
Freshman outfielder Tabitha von Kolen was named MAAC Rookie of the Week after her performance at the Pirate Invitational. In six games last week, von Kolen went a combined 6-for-14 with two triples and one RBI with a .529 on base percentage and a .714 slugging percentage. The Phoenix, Ariz., native reached base safely in all four of her at-bats in the victory over Loyola Chicago on Sunday.
• Manchester Dealing
Sophomore pitcher Olivia Manchester has been leading the way for the Griffs pitching staff. She is currently 3-0 in her three starts on the season sitting at a 1.91 ERA which is fourth in the conference. The Folsom, Calif. native has also struck out 20 batters on the season to sit 10th in the conference.
• One Final Tournament
Following the five-game tournament at Penn State, Canisius will head to Baltimore, Md. for the UMBC Tournament March 15-16. The Golden Griffins will take on host UMBC and Colgate.
