Costly Errors Allow Fairfield to Defeat Baseball; Series Finale Moved to Sunday

Canisius senior Peyton Consigli punched out a career-high 11 batters in relief, but his appearance was undone by costly defensive errors, allowing Fairfield to record a 12-2 win Saturday in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

The Stags continued their winning ways, improving to 18-7 on the season with a 7-1 conference record. The Golden Griffins fell to 4-17 with the loss, their second straight, and 2-6 in MAAC play.

Fairfield's Bowen Baker was credited with the win after as he allowed two runs and struck out four over five innings on the mound. Consigli is credited with the loss, despite a career-best strikeout day, after scattering three hits, two walks and allowing three runs (two earned).

For Canisius, junior Owen Silliman went 2-for-4 on the day, marking the only Griff with multiple hits. Redshirt sophomore Thomas Zwirecki and redshirt senior Josh Niles both tallied an RBI for Canisius, on a fielder's choice and sac fly, respectively.

The Stags were able to take an early 2-0 advantage in the first inning without a hit after Luke Nomura scored on a botched throw to third on a stolen base and Matthew Bucciero scored on wild pitch. Canisius tied the game in the second after senior Trent Rumley recorded a single and redshirt sophomore Ronan Glassford reached on a HBP. The pair executed a double steal and were driven home by Zwirecki and Niles.

Fairfield took a 3-2 lead in the following half inning as Nomura tallied his second home run of the series. The Stags increased their lead in the fifth, scoring two runs on an errant throw down to second on a steal. They continued to capitalize on Canisius fielding mistakes in the seventh, scoring two unearned runs and adding an RBI single from Nick Sturino.

The Stags tacked on runs in the eighth and ninth innings with RBI hits from Sean Meth, Nolan Colby and JP Kuczik to determine the 10-run margin of victory.
