Fairfield Outlasts Baseball

Despite the Golden Griffins cutting their deficit to one run in the eighth inning, Fairfield used a seven run top of the ninth to propel the Stags to an 11-3 victory over Canisius Sunday afternoon in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference baseball action at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

The Stags claimed the season sweep of the Griffs with the win, improving to 19-7 on the season and 8-1 in conference play. Canisius fell to 4-18 and 2-7 in league action with the loss.

Fairfield's Kyle Lesler earned the win on the hill after 5.0 innings of shutout baseball, where he allowed two hits, five walks and struck out five Canisius batters. Junior lefty Felix Morin had a solid start in the mound for the Griffs, but took the loss after he gave up four runs on nine hits with five Ks in 5.2 innings of work.

Senior Trent Rumley continued to swing a hot bat for Canisius, reaching base in all five of his plate appearances. Rumley went 3-for-3 with a single, a double and home run while scoring two runs, driving home a run, drawing two walks and recording a stolen base. Redshirt sophomore Thomas Zwirecki also tallied a multi-hit day, going 2-for-3 with an RBI single in the eighth inning.

Lesler and Morin dueled for the first five innings of the game, holding the other team's bats scoreless. Morin allowed only five base runners through the first five innings before the Stags broke open the scoring in the sixth. Fairfield opened the sixth with a single and ground-rule double that put two runners in scoring position. Nick Sturino poked a ball through the right side to drive in Fairfield's first run and JP Kuczik brought home another for the Stags with a sac fly. TJ Schmalzle capped off the four-run frame with a two-run homer to left field.

The Griffs got a run back in the home-half of the six as Rumley led the inning with a double and was driven home on a single from redshirt sophomore Ronan Glassford. Canisius continued to rally in the eighth inning with Rumley sparking the offense with his solo home run. Zwirecki cut the deficit to one run at 4-3 when his base hit allowed sophomore Eric Weeks to score.

The Stags broke the game open in the top of the ninth, loading the bases with two singles and a walk, before Tyler Kipp hit a grand slam to put the visiting team in front 8-3. Fairfield tacked on three more runs with RBI doubles by Kuczik and Nolan Colby.
