Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Marist Hands Men’s Lacrosse First MAAC Loss

Three players recorded hat tricks to pace Marist in a 14-10 victory over Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's lacrosse action Wednesday at Tenney Stadium in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

Collin Patrick, Drew Anderson and Sean Mullan all finished with three goals each to highlight a balanced attack for the Red Foxes (5-5, 3-1 MAAC). Patrick also dished out a pair of assists to lead all players with five points. Dylan Bedell went 22-of-26 at the faceoff "X" with five ground balls.

Senior Jaxon Fridge scored two goals and added two assists for the Golden Griffins (3-8, 3-1 MAAC). Freshman Peter Biglin notched two goals while senior Patrick Mitchell and sophomore Jordan Reed chipped in two points apiece as both players finished with a goal and an assist. Senior Tommy Kunz notched 14 saves between the pipes for Canisius.

Marist never traiied in the contest, using a pair of tallies from Mullen and a single strike from Anderson to jump out to an early 3-0 lead less than six minutes in.

Senior TJ Buono got the Griffs on the board with just over five minutes to play in the first quarter, but the Red Foxes answered back with their second three-goal spurt to build a 6-1 advantage early in the second.

Canisius finished the first half on a strong note, using goals from four different players to finish the frame on a 4-1 run and trim deficit to 7-5 at the half.

The Griffs pulled with one goal on two occasions during the opening minutes of the second half before an even-strength goal by Brady Dolan at the 7:25 mark of the third ignited a 4-1 stretch for the Red Foxes that lasted nearly 10 minutes and stretched the Marist cushion to 12-8 with less than 13 minutes to play in regulation.

Canisius attempted to battle back once again, using goals from Biglin and Fridge to pull within two with less than three minutes to play. The Red Foxes halted the Griffs comeback efforts, however, scoring twice in the final two minutes to put the game out of reach.

HEAD COACH MARK MIYASHITA'S POSTGAME COMMENTS
"Today was another tight MAAC contest as we expected. Unfortunately, we didn't come out of the gates the way we wanted to. Being down in a four-goal hole early in the first quarter definitely set us back and it ultimately proved to be the spread that we couldn't get past. So, we're going to learn quickly and regroup and be ready to go again here on Saturday back home against a talented Manhattan squad.

"We were not doing a good job handling the speed that Marist plays with on the offensive end of the field during the first quarter. It took us that quarter to truly get our feet underneath us and get a feel for the game. Once we did that, we were much better for the for the last three quarters. We didn't get the possession advantage that we've been able to have in the face-off game today. That's another area that we just got to be able to execute a little bit better."

"Jaxon (Fridge) is playing the way we expect him to. He's got championship experience. He's got a high lacrosse IQ. He's a competitor and it's exciting to see him starting to put this all together at this time of year when we are in conference play. We're going to need his leadership and his skill set to help us here as we enter the back half of league play."
