Men’s Lacrosse Knocks Off MAAC Frontrunner Manhattan

Canisius took advantage of a 7-2 run over a nearly 25-minute span to grab the lead and defeat Manhattan, 8-7, in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action Saturday at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo.

Seniors Patrick Mitchell and Jaxon Fridge tallied three points each as Mitchell recorded a hat trick while Fridge finished with a goal and two assists to lead the Golden Griffins (4-8, 4-1 MAAC), who grab a share of first place in the league standings with the win.

Sophomore Mason Wolford pitched two goals while junior Micah Hanson went 13-for-18 at the face-off "X" and scooped up a game-high 10 ground balls. Senior goalie Tommy Kunz finished with 10 saves between the pipes.

Drew Hiner notched three points (2g, 1a) and Liam Peabody notched two goals for the Jaspers (5-4, 4-1 MAAC). Connor Hapward recorded 10 saves in goal for the visitors.

Trailing 3-1 with less than a minute to play in the first half, Mitchell tucked a shot under the crossbar to pull Canisius within one, 3-2, at the break.

The Griffs carried the momentum from Mitchell's late tally into the second half, scoring four of the five goals registered in the third to carry a 6-4 advantage into the fourth.

Manhattan opened the fourth-quarter scoring to trim the deficit to one, only to see Canisius use tallies from Fridge and Mitchell to grab their largest lead of the game, 8-5, with just over six minutes on the clock.

The Jaspers made one last push as Peabody struck twice in 2:09 span to make it a one-goal game with 41 seconds to play.

Manhattan had a chance at an equalizer in the final seconds as Hiner got a shot off with less than 20 seconds to play, but Kunz was up to the task, allowing the Griffs to hold on for the one-goal victory.
