Baseball Closes Out Series at Saint Peter’s With A Win

Three Canisius batters fashioned multi-RBI performances and nine Golden Griffins recorded a hit as they powered their way to a 10-5 win over Saint Peter's in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference baseball action at Jaroschak Field in Jersey City, N.J.

With the win, Canisius improved to 3-15 on the season with a 2-4 conference ledger. The Peacocks moved to 7-15 and 3-6 in MAAC play with the setback.

Nine of the 10 Canisius batters to appear in the game recorded a hit, with the exception of junior Tommy Sheridan, who recorded two RBI on a sac fly and hit by pitch. Junior Mason Cisco led the way for the Griffs, going 3-for-5 with an RBI, a walk and a run scored. Sophomore JC Spinosa collected two RBI, going 1-for-3 with three walks and a run scored, while redshirt senior Josh Niles finished the day 2-for-3 with three runs scored. Graduate student Levi Abbott earned his first win of the season after 4.0 innings of work, allowing three runs, four hits and striking out four batters.

For Saint Peter's, starter Kurt Thomas was charged with the loss after giving up five runs in the second inning. Tyler DeClusin led the Peacocks with a 1-for-4 performance with three RBI. Tommy Kendrick scored a run and tallied two RBI on a 2-for-4 day at the plate.

The Griffs jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second inning, with Spinosa landing the opening blow on a two-run single that scored Niles and sophomore Eric Weeks. Spinosa then scored on a wild pitch before Sheridan brought home Brayden Hy with a sac fly. Redshirt sophomore Thomas Zwirecki capped off the inning with an RBI single that plated senior Trent Rumley

Saint Peter's responded in the third with three runs of their own, as Kendrick brought home two runs with a single and DeClusin scored Kendrick with a sacrifice fly. After giving up three runs in his opening inning, Abbott settled in, holding the Peacocks scoreless until the seventh inning.

The scored remained 5-3 until Canisius was able to break the drought in the seventh, loading the bases and scoring on Sheridan's hit-by-pitch. Rumley hit a sacrifice fly to score another run and Cisco recorded an RBI single to bring the score to 8-3.

The Peacocks pushed across single runs in the seventh in eighth innings, but could not spark a rally as junior Owen Silliman recorded an RBI single in the eighth and Zwirecki added a sac fly in the ninth to send the Griffs to victory.
